Julia Rohn bezeichnet die Ankäufe als “ethnografische Handelsware”. Im Shop
des Weltmuseums hat sie Merchandisingartikel aufs Korn genommen. Ihre
künstlerische Intervention über die Rückbindung von Souvenirs an die Objekte im Schauraum soll BesucherInnen zum Nachdenken über Materialkultur, Trophäen, Schätze und Aneignung anregen.

An ethnographic museum displays objects that are already in a sensitive context
as most of them were accumulated through robbery or hegemonic, colonial
relationships. One could always question the purpose of exhibiting these objects:
Does the intention to produce and transfer knowledge really outweigh the
representation of power? This is the focus of Julia Rohn’s engagement with the museum shop of the Weltmuseum, run by the KHM-association. Rohn points out that the purchasing of “ethnographic merchandise” could be perceived as a continuation of the myth of conquering and the drive to discover and possess. What does it mean to buy a refrigerator magnet showing a famous Mexican feather headdress and to put it on one’s fridge at home? In doing so, which (subconscious) meanings are created?
How are conquering and consumption connected? HAUL is a work-in-progress
about material culture, the concept of souvenirs, trophies and treasures, as well as appropriation and possession.

Untiefe thematisiert die Vergänglichkeit des Menschen. Die Installation besteht aus 16 Schwimmschirmen. Das Originalverdeck der Regenschirme wurde durch eine Rettungsdecke ersetzt. Alle Schirme sind am Flussboden mit Leinen verankert. Diese Anordnung ermöglicht es ihnen, sich zu bewegen, sich zu drehen, zu wackeln und sogar zu sinken. Der Wind und der leichte Strom des Flusses lösen eine Bewegung aus. Das Licht wird von der Spiegelfläche in alle Richtungen reflektiert. Auf den ersten Blick sehen die Schirme aus wie Rettungsinstrumente, doch mit der Zeit wird deutlich, dass sie am dringendsten Hilfe benötigen.

Untiefe engages with the transitory nature of human beings. It consists of 16 floating umbrellas. The original canopy of the umbrellas has been replaced by space blankets. All the umbrellas are anchored to the river bottom with rubber cord. This arrangement allows them to move around, to spin, wobble and even to sink. Motion is triggered by the wind and the slight current of the river. Light is reflected in all directions by the reflective surface. At first glance they look like rescue equipment, however it becomes obvious over time that they actually need the help.
